Cedar will naturally hold up to the weather just fine as is. It does darken over time, but ages gracefully. If, however, you desire to stain or varnish it, you certainly may. We do recommend you search for something safe for the birds.

This listing is for the Birdhouse only, no post or stand is included. Ideally, this Birdhouse is designed to screw down to the top of a 4 x 4 post. You could also use some L-shaped hardware brackets which you attach to the side of a 4 x 4 post and bottom of house.
