Cedar will naturally hold up to the weather just fine, as is. It does grey or darken over time, but ages gracefully. If, however, you desire to stain it, you certainly may.

Experts say the Barred Owl house should be placed 12-15 feet high with the entrance hole facing any direction, but allowing a wide flight path for the Owl to enter or leave it’s home. Please use caution and perhaps, get help, to install this as it is large and heavy.

What an exciting adventure to have a Barred Owl in your backyard! Barred Owls are generally 18-20” long and are known for their Hooting Call which sounds like, “Who Cooks for You? Who Cooks for you all?” They get their name for the stripes or “bars” across their chest and wings. They have brown eyes, not yellow, as seen in most other species. This Owl is active at night and early morning. They are typically in wooded areas and are cavity nesters, finding a hole in a tree or a nest box built for them that is attached high on a tree.

Barred Owls are effective at controlling rodents in the neighborhood which is an advantage. They also prey upon small mammals, rabbits, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. Usually staying within 6 miles of their nest box, Barred Owls don’t stray too far from home. They are slightly smaller than the Great Horned Owl which is their main predatory threat. They are also less aggressive. Videos on the internet show several Barred Owls actually being affectionate towards humans. However, please always use caution with wild creatures.

The Salt River Large Owl House would be a fantastic gift for any Wedding, Anniversary, or Housewarming! Any Gardener, Bird Watcher, Teacher, Healthcare Worker, or Grandparent would love it as well!
